A Day Out in Sacramento: AFDCS/ATA Tour

Monday, August 29, 2022
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The AFDCS and the ATA are pleased to bring a popular tradition back, a tour in conjunction with our annual conventions. This year, the AFDCS is joining the ATA for a Monday tour on the day following the Great American Stamp Show. Monday was chosen because there were too many conflicts on Wednesday, the day before the show.

We’ll board our bus at the Sheraton Grand at 8 a.m., and begin our day with a tour of Sacramento sights. Our tour guide will give us a bit of history as we travel around the city.

At 10:30, we’ll begin our guided tour of the California State Railroad Museum, to experience the history of how railroads shaped people’s lives, the economy and the unique culture of California and the West. See what it was like to travel in a Pullman-style car and dine on railroad china.

Our day continues with a visit to Old Sacramento, with restaurants and shops in an old West setting. There will be time for lunch and shopping on your own.

At 2:30 we’ll board the bus to travel to the Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park, where we’ll have a guided tour of the 19,000 square foot mansion once owned by the railroad magnate who was also governor of California. The magnificent mansion has just had a $22 million renovation.

We’ll return to the Sheraton Grand at about 5 p.m.

Cost of $55 per person includes transportation and admission tickets, as well as guided tours.

See you in Sacramento and on the tour.

Update: December 27, 2021:

According to the January 2022 issue of the American Philatelist, the Pony Cars stamps will be issued August 25, 2022 at the Great American Stamp Show. The USPS is working with the California Automobile Museum to have examples of the cars on display on the show floor.

Update: November 28, 2021:

Americover 2022, held as part of the Great American Stamp Show (GASS), sponsored by the AFDCS, American Philatelic Society (APS) and American Topical Association (ATA) will be held August 25-28, 2022 at the SAFE Credit Union Convention, 1400 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. There will be an insert in the March-April 2022 issue of First Days with more information and a form to purchase event tickets. Until then, come back to this page or the Americover Facebook page for updates.

The show hotel is Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel, 1230 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. The hotel is adjacent to the convention center. Show rate is $150 a night single or double occupancy, $175 a night triple occupancy or $200 a night quad occupancy. Parking is $25 a night self-park or $32 a night valet. Reservations can be made by calling (916) 447-1700 or (888) 236-2427 and asking for the GASS rate or click here to make an online reservation. The show rate is currently available from the Monday night before the show until the Sunday night after the show.

One likely change is that the pre-show tour that we held annually from 1999 to 2019 will become a joint AFDCS/ATA tour on the Monday after the show. There are several reasons for this change. First, both the AFDCS and ATA have seen a decrease in tour participation; we pay for a full bus even if it is half full. Second, there are more events on the day before the show that prevent tour participation; dealers, exhibitors, and those setting up society tables would be unable to attend. As of this writing, details of the tour are being finalized. Return to this page or the Americover Facebook page for updates. If/when a Monday tour is confirmed, the show rate will be extended to the Monday night after the show.

The following AFDCS events are planned at Americover/GASS:
  • The AFDCS President’s Banquet with cachet contest results will be Thursday evening at the show hotel.
  • The AFDCS Business Meeting will be Friday morning at 9AM at the convention center.
  • The Cachetmakers Bourse will be during show hours on Saturday near the USPS sales area on the show floor.
  • The Charter/Life Member Breakfast will likely return on Sunday morning.
  • We will have a Sunday night post-show dinner; location not yet selected.
  • A hospitality suite, sponsored by the Graebner and Ries Chapters with the always popular silent auction, will be held Wednesday night through Saturday night.
Co-sponsor events include the ATA President’s Reception on Friday evening at a local restaurant and the APS/AFDCS/ATA Celebration Banquet, where top exhibit awards and lifetime achievement awards will be presented, on Saturday night.
