Many First Day Cover Activities at Great American Stamp Show

First day cover collectors will have many activity choices at Great American Stamp Show, which will be held August 25-28 in the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. The American First Day Cover Society is a co-host of the event, and is holding its convention and Americover exhibition during the show.

The options include talks by U.S. Postal Service officials involved in FDCs, a cachetmakers bourse where producers will be selling their covers, the issuance of new U.S. stamps, the announcement of the annual cachetmaking contest, and talks by FDC collectors about their areas of expertise. Also, each night the AFDCS will sponsor a hospitality suite that includes snacks and a silent auction.

A Day Out in Sacramento: AFDCS/ATA Tour

Monday, August 29, 2022
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The AFDCS and the ATA are pleased to bring a popular tradition back, a tour in conjunction with our annual conventions. This year, the AFDCS is joining the ATA for a Monday tour on the day following the Great American Stamp Show. Monday was chosen because there were too many conflicts on Wednesday, the day before the show.

We’ll board our bus at the Sheraton Grand at 9:45 a.m. for a 10:00 departure for the California State Railroad Museum.

At 10:30, we’ll begin our guided tour of the California State Railroad Museum, to experience the history of how railroads shaped people’s lives, the economy and the unique culture of California and the West. See what it was like to travel in a Pullman-style car and dine on railroad china.

At 12:00 our day continues with a visit to Old Sacramento, with restaurants and shops in an old West setting. There will be time for lunch and shopping on your own.

At 2:00 p.m. we’ll board the bus to travel to the Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park, where we’ll have a guided tour of the 19,000 square foot mansion once owned by the railroad magnate who was also governor of California. The magnificent mansion has just had a $22 million renovation.

At 3:30 we’ll walk back to the Sheraton Grand (estimated 6-10 minutes) through the Capitol gardens and building.

Cost of $55 per person includes transportation and admission tickets, as well as guided tours.

See you in Sacramento and on the tour.
